This Week: Yang Simplified 8 — Moves 1–2
Hello Friends,
This week’s Seated Chi Flow session begins a new sequence: the Yang Simplified 8 Form.
This short form is built from foundational movements in the Yang Family Tai Chi system, and over the next several sessions we’ll gradually work through the sequence together.
This week we focus on the first two movements:
• Repulse Monkey
• Brush Knee and Push
We begin with gentle warmups, including Preparation Form, head rotations, shoulder rotations, and torso movements to help release tension and prepare the body.
From there, we revisit Upward and Downward, emphasizing smooth expansion on the inhale and soft return on the exhale.
Although the movement may appear simple, it becomes much more interesting when the whole body participates rather than just the arms.
We also spend time working with Repulse Monkey’s visualization of energy between the hands — imagining a soft energy ball that helps develop awareness of spacing, relaxation, and continuity.
The second movement, Brush Knee and Push, introduces more coordination between the hands, torso, and breath.
One hand brushes past the knee while the other extends forward in a gentle push.
As always, the emphasis is not on force, but on:
Relaxation
Continuity
Whole-body integration
Rather than trying to memorize everything immediately, simply allow the movements to become more familiar through repetition.
Fluency develops gradually.
